Getting an SR-22 for your insurance is normally something you are not completely sure how to go about getting. Most people probably have a hazy idea of what it is. Maybe you’ve had a friend who needed one or you understand vaguely that it has to do with car insurance.  That is what we are here for. All you have to do is call Focus Insurance of St. Charles and we will get you headed in the right direction. Yes it is that easy. You call us requesting an SR-22, we handle everything from there and you will be fully covered with the added SR-22 by the end of the day and sometimes within the hour.

What is an SR-22 and when do you need it?

Not everyone needs an SR-22. Regulations vary from state to state. Usually, it is required by the court or mandated by the state only for certain driving-related violations. For example:

  • DUI convictions
  • Reckless driving
  • Accidents caused by uninsured drivers

If you need an SR-22, the courts or your state Motor Vehicle Department will notify you.

How do you file an SR-22?

Filing an SR-22 doesn’t take much effort on your part. Your auto insurer handles most of the work for you to provide verification to your state that you have car insurance coverage. For a new insurance quote, just mention that an SR-22 filing is needed.

SR-22 does not replace insurance

It’s important to understand that even though you may hear it referred to as “SR-22 insurance,” an SR-22 is not auto insurance and is not a substitute for auto insurance. Instead, it is simply certification that your auto insurer provides to your state that proves you have auto liability policy coverage that meets the state’s minimum requirements

Is an SR-22 expensive?

Having an SR-22 filing might cost you a little extra (temporarily):

  • There’s a fee to file it, generally around $25. If you don’t have insurance, the fee is included in your Insurance quote.
  • Your insurance rate might go up if you need the SR-22 because of a moving violation or accident.
  • Certain states require you to pay in full when you have insurance that includes an SR-22 filing.

How long do you have to carry an SR-22?

The duration of an SR-22 obligation varies by state and the nature of the underlying traffic offense(s). In some states, this duration may be as short as one year or as long as five. Generally speaking, a typical SR-22 period lasts from 2-3 years.

How long is the SR-22 valid?

As long as your insurance policy remains active, your SR-22 should remain valid. If your insurance policy is canceled while you’re still required to carry an SR-22, your insurance company is required to notify the proper state authorities. Failure to maintain continuous coverage could cause you to lose your driving privileges.
